2009 Mexican Eco-Blogging Green Adventure – Water Everywhere, But Not A Drop To Drink

This eco-blogging adventure in Mexico has been wonderful for my family – we have had a lot of fun in water – oceans, swimming pools, and cenotes. Here you see my youngest in the ocean next to our hotel.

Water is by-far the most important resource on earth. Without it we would not be able to survive. Oceans cover almost 70 percent of the planet and contain about 98 percent of the water. Yet, due to its salinity, it is not possible to drink the ocean water. There is only about 2 percent of water on the planet which is fresh water. About 1.6 percent of that water is locked in the polar ice caps and glaciers. Another 0.36 percent is in reachable underground aquifers and wells, with 0.036 percent found in rivers and lakes. You can see that compared to all the water that is available on earth, the entire human race exists on only a few percent.

Below is a little video I did on the importance of conserving water. The wind was strong during the making of this video and I was really blown all over the beach. Wind has a strong influence on the ocean water and has caused large waves along the beach front behind me - -

Mexico, like the United States and many areas around the world, is under an increasing level of water stress. In 1944 the United States and Mexico signed an International Treaty over water called the “Treaty of Washington.” This treaty allows for the sharing and protection of the Colorado River, the Tijuana River, and the Rio Bravo/Rio Grande.

In the Yucatan Peninsula region of Mexico there is a strong concern for water conservation. Due to increased tourism, water usage is high. Therefore, hotels and centers around this region ask that patrons do not use excessive water as a consideration for the environment. A wonderful way to help the local community and keep this region alive for continued tourism.

Wow Shawna, that's really cool. Not a bad way to mix in a little work with a lot of pleasure no doubt. But even better, what a great message. You are clearly doing some darn good research while you're down there. Good for you. I'd have a hard time breaking away from that awesome beach long enough to check my facts.
