Today I bring to your attention someone absolutely incredible – Captain Charles Moore - who has discovered and is tracking a horrific, devastating environmental issue of such grand proportion it dwarfs most states in size, and indeed, is as large as two Texas’s put together. Watching the amazing TED coverage of Moore and his discovery is something both you and your children should do. Why? Because Charles Moore really discusses something important - the world needs help and it is up to us to provide it.
Charles Moore’s story is that he discovered, while participating in a yachting competition in the Pacific, a huge section of floating plastic garbage in the ocean the size of two Texases. This plastic garbage is trapped in the Pacific Gyre, which is a swirling vortex that rides on the North Pacific ocean currents. Gyres are caused by the Coriolis Effect which is based on planetary vorticity combined with friction which causes giant circular water currents.
Critical to the North Pacific Gyre is Moore’s discovery of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. According to the information on the TED website, “this Great Pacific Garbage Patch in some places outweighs even the surface waters' biomass six-to-one”.
Devastated with the way the Great Pacific Garbage Patch has touched the environment, Moore has been analyzing the giant garbage whirlpool and its negative effects on the ocean he has spent his life living and working on. With the help of the Algalita Marine Research Foundation, which he founded, he hopes to make a difference.
