Once again it’s that time of year – school has begun. According to Discovery’s Planet Green website, “every ton of paper -- or 220,000 sheets-- that is recycled saves approximately 17 trees. For scale, the average school tosses 38 tons of paper -- the equivalent of 644 trees -- each year.”
Here’s a photo of my little cutie heading off to elementary school. When you send your children off to school, how are you helping them learn about taking care of themselves as adults? What can make a huge difference for our children is modeling good adult behavior - purchasing post-consumer recycled paper for instance, and educating our children to make sure it gets recycled yet again after it is used at school.
Donating time to assist organizations such as SCARCE (School and Community Assistance for Recycling & Composting Education), a not-for-profit organization which spends considerable time and effort recycling school products such as paper, crayons, pens, and other supplies will really help your children to connect with the process of where our products come from and where they usually go to – over stuffed landfills.
Teaching your children to reduce, reuse, and recycle school products is easy – just like teaching them to brush their teeth. Good habits start at home and need to be learned. Bad habits like being wasteful also start at home, so take the time to change that.
Make a difference in the life of a child by modeling and educating how to take care of the world by reducing, reusing, and recycling!
