The Challenge: to find a way to recycle or reuse found objects that would normally be placed in the landfill. It is a better way to save money as well as save the landfill - you and your children might learn a little bit more about taking care of the earth in the process of doing the crafts as well.
To be placed on our incredible sustainable holiday tree, the decorations have to qualify by following the below rules:
Recycled Holiday Tree Challenge Rules – the components must be -
- Reused, or
- Recycled, or
- Garage Sale Purchased, or
- From a Resale Shop, or
- From the Natural Environment
Any craft parts beyond glue, staples, and needle/thread also need to be from a resale shop or disassembled and reused from a previous source.
How To Make An Aluminum Pie Pan Ornament
Supplies:
Clean pie pans
Thin point marker
Non-toxic glue
Scissors
How To:
- Cut the pie pan “sides” off of the pie pan. This will give you a flat metal surface you can use to draw on or cut out additional shapes.
- Cut out any design you would like – we cut out half moons and suns.
- Draw holiday themed designs on the front of the metal cut-out with glue.
- Sprinkle glitter on the glue. Let dry.
- Punch a hole in the top of the ornament. Hang.
- To make the unique curly-cue designs, cut the heavy outer edge off of the pie pan wall.
- Roll the cut wall into a tight circle. When you
release the circle, the aluminum will hold it’s “curly” shape.
- Decorate with glue and top with glitter.
- Punch a hole in the top of the ornament. Hang.
Please send photos and links so we can see what you have done with holiday trees to help save the landfills. Thanks!
